I braved a day of biking in the city to check out My Farm, an urban gardening company that is installing victory gardens across San Francisco. My Farm has soil trucked in, but everything else arrives on site via bicycle - which seriously reduces the total embodied energy. These guys are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and dedicated - especially getting up those SF hills carrying loads of tools! I didn't bring my camera, but here's some great images from their website about what they do, before and after. I recommend volunteering - it's fun and you learn a lot!
